Three people on board a small plane that crashed into a mountain in Vermont have miraculously survived thanks to the snow covering its surface.
The Piper PA-28 plummeted into the side of Mount Equinox in Manchester on Wednesday morning, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and Manchester Fire Department. The plane's pilot reported the crash near the summit at approximately 8.33am, telling a 911 operator that all three people on board had "non-life-threatening injuries", Jamie Greene, the first assistant chief at the Manchester Fire Department said during a press conference.
"The snow helped cushion the fall," Greene explained. He said that the pilot was also able to maneuver the plane to avoid trees as it crashed. First responders were quickly deployed to the crash site but while the snow may have softened the crash, it impeded rescue efforts.

Rescuers faced "extremely difficult conditions" as they had to get through four feet of snow to reach the crash victims. "It was waist-deep in snow. ... It was very rugged terrain, but our guys pushed through," Greene said. Halfway up the mountain, they had to revert to snowshoes they'd borrowed from a local community member.
The team eventually made it to the crash site at 10:16am, officials said. Two helicopters were also dispatched from Albany as part of the rescue efforts. One hoisted all of the survivors from the wreckage.
Two were taken to the Manchester Public Safety Facility while one was airlifted to the Albany Medical Center for further evaluation, officials said. Greene said the cause of the accident hasn't been determined and officials did not know what the flight plan was.

He noted it had been foggy before the crash. "Just above the plane crash there was a lot of fog up there. At the time I got on the scene the fog was halfway down the mountain," he said. The fog cleared during rescue efforts, allowing search teams to locate the victims.
The Federal Aviation Administration are scheduled to arrive on Friday morning to conduct an investigation. Greene thanked nearby residents for providing support to the rescue operation.
He said: "Your support, whether it was providing snow shoes, snowmobiles or food, played a crucial role in ensuring a successful rescue operation. Thank you for your generosity and unwavering support."
